San Juan Scenic Jeep Tours has been part of that story from the beginning. Our company helped build the route from Black Bear Pass into Telluride in 1959, using our Cherokee Chief Jeeps to pioneer what would become one of America's most legendary four-wheel-drive roads.

Our legacy was carried forward by the legendary "Wild Bill" Sutherland, who guided guests over Black Bear Pass more than 2,000 times from the 1970s into the 2020s. His experience, passion, and respect for the mountain helped define the standard that our guides continue to follow today. Around here, we've always believed in "Doing Black Bear right since 1959."

Over the decades, Black Bear Pass has earned international recognition, appearing multiple times in National Geographicand inspiring C.W. McCall's iconic song Black Bear Road.
